teatotaled posted a photo: Granite counter tops, much as they provide a really nice reflective surface, are much harder to work with than they look like. Too high an angle and you get too much return from the material and not enough reflection from the subject. And with the light from the flash bouncing all over the place you really have to work at controlling the path of the light. Fun challenge though, and I’m quite happy with the result. The concept for this photo was inspired by some playing-around by myself and John Smirnios, but the final design and execution on this was all mine. This was lit from the left using a 580ex on 1/4 power, fired into an improvised softbox, using some cooking books as gobos and a piece of legal-sized printer paper (folded in half to create an "L" so it would stand up - so really the lighting area was half that.) Lit almost directly from the left, slightly above the level of the surface. (Novel-sized books placed in the way of the bottom of the paper.) I also added a second piece of paper (taped to a light stand) on the right as a reflector so that you can discern a slight edge on the right side of the front bowl. Otherwise it blended right in with the backdrop. |
